Russian defenses shot down more than a dozen Ukrainian drones approaching Moscow on Tuesday morning, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin tweeted in a series of updates. He stated multiple interceptions in hours and said emergency services were assessing debris. No city injuries were initially reported.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said in another report that it destroyed 69 Ukrainian drones overnight from midnight to 7 a.m. local time in different areas, including the Moscow Oblast and Russian-occupied Crimea. The ministry also referred to earlier nighttime interceptions earlier in that time period. The reports could not be independently verified.
Flights at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport were canceled and delayed overnight during the wave of intercepts, with national carrier Aeroflot saying it would resume normal business later Tuesday. The authorities further said debris checks were taking place in the areas where the intercepts were made.
Ukraine rarely writes about strikes inside Russia, but both Ukrainian and Russian forces have been using more and more long-range drones in the recent few weeks. Leading media and Kyiv officials reported that Russian missile and drone attacks pounded Ukrainian cities overnight, as part of a grinding air war that has accelerated as autumn nears.
