In a politically charged act of violence, Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were shot and killed early Saturday morning at their home in Brooklyn Park. Authorities say the gunman was impersonating a police officer.
At a press conference, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the killings as a “politically motivated assassination.” The governor also confirmed that State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were similarly attacked at their home in Champlin. Both were shot multiple times and underwent emergency surgery. Walz stated he was “optimistic” about their recovery.
“This is an attack on democracy and a direct assault on the values of Minnesota. We will not tolerate violence fueled by political hatred,” — Gov. Tim Walz via press briefing.
According to a report from 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, all Minnesota state lawmakers are now under protective custody, with enhanced security coordination from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies.
FOX 9 reported that two suspects may have been involved in the attacks. One suspect has reportedly been taken into custody, while a manhunt is underway for the other. The suspects allegedly posed as law enforcement to gain access to the lawmakers’ homes.
Gov. Walz acknowledged the ongoing investigation in a post on X:
I’ve been briefed this morning on an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene. We will share more information soon.
