Minneapolis Halloween Shooting in Dinkytown Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured

Police say a crowded Halloween night turned chaotic as officers responded to gunfire around 2:30 a.m. near campus.

One person was killed and two others were wounded early Saturday after bursts of automatic gunfire in the Dinkytown commercial district near the University of Minnesota, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Around 2:38 a.m., officers heard shooting near 13th Avenue SE and 5th Street SE. They found three men with gunshot wounds. One of the victims died at the spot, and two others were sent to the hospital. Police found three guns, and detectives are trying to figure out who owned the guns and what caused the shooting

“Officers began providing immediate medical aid to all three victims including CPR and applying a tourniquet. One male found at the corner of 5th Street Southeast/13th Avenue Southeast was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said adding One adult male and one juvenile male were transported by EMS to the hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injuries.

The University of Minnesota Department of Public Safety issued multiple SAFE-U alerts advising the campus community to avoid the area and later shared suspect descriptions as officers searched for at least one person who fled. The alerts noted the shooting location and warned of an active investigation in Dinkytown.

Police said the area was crowded following Halloween nightlife and described the scene as chaotic. One of the wounded is a University of Minnesota student, according to school officials. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning. A police media briefing on the incident was posted by the department.

Anyone who had information, images, or videos from the area was asked to get in touch with detectives or send tips anonymously.
