Parts of Maryland and Virginia could see temperatures fall into the upper 20s and low 30s early Sunday, prompting a freeze warning from the National Weather Service.
The Baltimore/Washington office’s warning runs from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 18, and includes parts of West Virginia’s eastern panhandle. Issued at 12:36 a.m. Saturday, it upgrades an earlier freeze watch.
Forecasters warned that the cold could kill crops and sensitive plants and possibly damage outdoor plumbing left unprotected. Residents should protect tender plants before temperatures fall.
In Maryland, the warning covers Washington, Frederick, Carroll, Allegany and Garrett counties, northern Baltimore County and northwestern Harford County. Hagerstown, Frederick, Westminster and Cumberland are among the affected communities.
In Virginia, it covers Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Clarke and Highland counties, western Loudoun County, and the northern and central Virginia Blue Ridge. Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Front Royal and Luray are included.
Farther east, a frost advisory runs from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday for portions of Virginia and Maryland between the Blue Ridge and Interstate 95. Temperatures could fall to 34 degrees.
That advisory includes Nelson, Albemarle, Greene, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange, Culpeper and Fauquier counties, eastern Loudoun County and northwestern Prince William County. It also covers northwestern Montgomery and northwestern Howard counties in Maryland.
Charlottesville, Leesburg, Culpeper and Warrenton are among the communities covered. The weather service’s hazardous weather outlook also warns of possible frost and localized freezing west of I-95 elsewhere in the Washington region Saturday night into Sunday.
Additional freeze warnings run from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday in southwestern and west-central Virginia.
The Blacksburg office’s warning covers Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, Alleghany and Bath counties, with temperatures forecast as low as 31 degrees. The Charleston, West Virginia, office’s warning includes Dickenson and Buchanan counties, with lows reaching 29.
A frost advisory from the Blacksburg office runs during the same hours for Roanoke, Botetourt, Rockbridge, Patrick, Franklin, Bedford and Amherst counties. Temperatures there could fall to 37 degrees.
The Blacksburg office also forecasts another round of frost and freezing temperatures early Monday in parts of southwestern and west-central Virginia, posing a further risk to sensitive plants.
