Sudan’s Marrah Mountains Landslide Wipes Out Village, 1,000 Dead

Rebel group says Tarasin was completely leveled after heavy rains; Sudan’s Sovereign Council reports aid mobilized.

The Sudan Liberation Movement–Army (SLM-A) announced late Monday that a landslide had destroyed the community of Tarasin in Central Darfur after days of heavy rain. The collapse happened in the Marrah Mountains on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

The SLM-A said the village was “completely leveled to the ground” and that “initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than 1,000 people,” with “only one person” surviving, as reported by the Associated Press.

Abdel-Wahid Nour, the group’s commander, asked for help from other countries right away: “The size and scope of the disaster are huge and can’t be put into words,” he added, according to the Associated Press.

According to a statement from the Sudanese Sovereign Council, the council regretted “the death of hundreds of innocent residents” and added that “all possible capabilities” had been activated to help the area. The council didn’t give an official number of deaths.

The Associated Press reported that video from a local Marrah Mountains news station showed a flat area between mountain peaks as people looked through the wreckage. The Associated Press said that it is still hard to get independent confirmation of the number of casualties because of problems with access and security in the area.
