    Highlights:
    • Marília produced 123.61 litres of milk in 24 hours during the 34th Milk Sands Tournament in Brazil.
    • She broke the previous Guinness World Record held by Cuba’s Ubre Blanca since 1981.
    • The cow belongs to Girolando breed—a mix of Holstein and Gir Zebu—known for milk yield and hardiness.
    • Marília is also noted for her reproductive success, producing eight heifers and one bull calf.

São Paulo, Brazil – A cow named Marília FIV Teatro de Naylo has shattered a nearly four-decade-old world record by producing an astounding 123.61 litres of milk in just 24 hours, setting a new global benchmark for mechanical milking output. The feat took place on August 3, 2019, during the 34th edition of the Torneio Leiteiro (Milk Tournament) held in Areias, São Paulo.

According to the Guinness World Records, Marília’s record-breaking yield amounted to 127.570 kg of milk over three separate milkings—surpassing the legendary Cuban cow Ubre Blanca, who had held the record since June 1981 with 110.9 kg in a day.

“It was the first tournament in which she participated and she already came out with this great achievement,” said Gustavo Souza, one of Marília’s breeders.

    Exceptional Genetics and Environment

Marília was born on March 16, 2014, at the Girolando NS farm in São Paulo, jointly owned by André Souza and Gustavo Souza. She is part of the Girolando breed, a strategic cross between Holstein-Friesian (5/8) and Gir Zebu (3/8). This hybridization is ideal for Brazil’s environment, combining the Holstein’s renowned milk productivity with the Gir’s resilience and longevity.

In addition to her dairy capabilities, Marília is known for her strong reproductive health. She has successfully birthed eight heifers and one bull calf. In a recent in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, she produced 16 embryos from a single collection.

    Symbol of Agricultural Excellence

The tournament where Marília set the record is part of Brazil’s long-standing Torneio Leiteiro tradition—an agricultural competition where farmers present their top-performing cows for evaluation. Metrics include milk quantity, fat and protein content, and overall animal health.

According to Dairy Global, this achievement underscores the advances made in dairy farming through targeted breeding programs, optimized feeding strategies, and climate-adapted animal care.

    What’s in a Name?

Marília’s name gained widespread recognition thanks to the famous Portuguese poem “Marília de Dirceu,” symbolizing romantic femininity and poetic elegance. Her record has now added a new layer of legacy to that name—this time, in the annals of agricultural history.
