- Manipur experienced three earthquakes on May 28, 2025, with magnitudes of 5.2, 2.5, and 3.9.
- The strongest quake, measuring 5.2, struck Churachandpur district at 1:54 AM IST.
- A 2.5 magnitude tremor occurred in Noney district at 2:26 AM IST.
- Another 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit Churachandpur at 10:23 AM IST.
- No casualties or significant damage have been reported so far.
A series of earthquakes rattled Manipur in the early hours of Wednesday, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 5.2 in Churachandpur district, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic activity underscores the region’s vulnerability due to its complex tectonic settings.
The first tremor, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, struck Churachandpur at 1:54 AM IST. The epicenter was located at 24.46°N latitude and 93.70°E longitude, with a focal depth of 40 km. This area lies near the Churachandpur-Mao Fault, a significant strike-slip fault line associated with the subduction of the Indian plate beneath the Burma microplate.
Approximately 32 minutes later, at 2:26 AM IST, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 was recorded in Noney district. The epicenter was at 24.53°N latitude and 93.50°E longitude, with a depth of 25 km.
A third tremor, measuring 3.9 in magnitude, struck Churachandpur again at 10:23 AM IST. The NCS reported the epicenter at 24.55°N latitude and 93.70°E longitude, with a depth of 36 km.
Despite the series of quakes, there have been no reports of casualties or significant structural damage. Residents in various parts of the state, including the capital Imphal, felt the tremors. One resident from Ningthoukhong village in Bishnupur district recounted being awakened by the shaking.
Manipur’s susceptibility to seismic events is well-documented, given its position in the Indo-Burmese tectonic region. The area has a history of moderate to large earthquakes, including the 6.7 magnitude quake in Tamenglong district in 2016.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
