Authorities said that a gas explosion in a pub in Puente de Vallecas, Madrid, Spain, this Saturday killed at least one person and hurt 25 others, three of them badly and two perhaps seriously.
Madrid’s Emergency Services said on X that local firefighters and police uncovered the death of a man early Sunday morning.
The blast happened around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at number 3 Calle Manuel Maroto. It affected a commercial building that had been turned into a home, the building above it, and the Mis Tesoros bar next door. Carlos Marín de la Bárcena, the chief of the Madrid City Council Fire Department, said that there was a gas explosion, but they don’t know what kind of gas it was, what caused it, or where it happened yet.
The emergency services announced on Saturday night that two of the casualties were in “serious” condition and three were “potentially serious.”
Four individuals have been retrieved alive from the rubble, according to firefighter chief Javier Romero.
Local news sources said that the explosion at the “Mis Tesoros” pub in the Puente de Vallecas region of Madrid at 3 p.m. (1300 UTC/GMT) was caused by a gas leak.
Carlos Marin, the chief of the Madrid City Council Fire Department, told the daily El Pais that there was a gas explosion, but they still don’t know what kind of gas it was, what caused it, or where it happened.
Inmaculada Sanz, the deputy mayor of Madrid and the person in charge of security and emergencies at the town hall, said that it was still “too early to say what the explosion could have been.”
