French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that the prime minister would lead a crisis cell Monday to speed aid to people affected by the previous day’s violence.
In a televised address published by the Élysée, Macron also called for a review of intelligence and preparations for the protests. He said authorities must explain what happened.
Prefects, working with mayors, could ban gatherings when necessary to protect public buildings, shops and cities, he said.
Macron distinguished peaceful protesters’ legitimate concerns from the violence. He asked the government to bring students, teachers, unions, employers, local authorities and lawmakers together this week to develop proposals.
He also said he would travel to Gulf countries Monday to secure energy supplies.
