Infant Dies After Leesburg Assault; Police Say Murder Charge Is Forthcoming

Police say upgraded counts are expected as the investigation continues.

An 8-month-old girl who was injured in a Sept. 17 attack at the 0 block of Hancock Place NE has died despite the injuries, the Leesburg Police Department announced Tuesday. The incident was charged as strangulation, but it is being prepared for elevated charges.

Police identified that the suspect, 22-year-old Alvaro Mejia Ayala of Leesburg, was arrested Sept. 17 and remains in custody at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. In conjunction with the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, additional charges — including murder — are expected based on the results of a further investigation and forensic analysis, police indicate.

Leesburg Police Chief Thea Pirnat announced the case has “deeply impacted” the community and extended condolences to the family, adding about the work of first responders, medical personnel, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecutors. A statement video was made public by the department (YouTube).
