GasBuddy Forecasts $3.15 National Average for Labor Day, Lowest Since 2020

Labor Day gas prices 2025 forecast: GasBuddy sees a $3.15 national average—the lowest since 2020—with relief likely as winter gasoline returns and demand cools.

    DEVELOPING

GasBuddy, North America’s trusted fuel savings platform, says U.S. drivers should see an average of $3.15 per gallon over Labor Day weekend—14 cents below 2024 and the lowest holiday price since 2020. The company’s five-year comparison shows averages of $2.22 (2020), $3.16 (2021), $3.79 (2022), $3.77 (2023) and $3.29 (2024). GasBuddy notes some states have seen recent upticks tied to localized refinery issues, but broader relief is likely as winter-grade gasoline returns in mid-September and post-summer demand eases.

“Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and when it comes to gas prices, it’s been the cheapest summer to hit the road since the pandemic… with the potential for the national average to fall below $3 per gallon this fall,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, who also cautioned that hurricane season, trade and tariff uncertainty, and Russia’s war in Ukraine could still sway prices.

What’s next: Watch for price movement as refineries complete maintenance and markets shift to winter blends in the coming weeks.
