Zelenskyy: Russian Drones Kill 1 in Kyiv; Ukraine Hits Oil Sites

Zelenskyy presses for tougher sanctions on foreign drone parts and says Ukraine is answering with strikes of its own

Russia fired more than 100 attack drones at Ukraine overnight, killing one person in Kyiv and injuring four others, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X.

Nearly 50 of the drones were jet-powered, he wrote. Ukrainian forces neutralized most of them, though some still hit their targets.

In Kyiv, Shahed drones struck the Pivdennyi Bridge several times. A residential high-rise was hit in the morning, and one person died. Zelenskyy sent his condolences to the family.

Elsewhere, a kindergarten was hit in Kherson, according to the post. In Kharkiv, Russian forces attacked a grocery store, and an institute and critical infrastructure were damaged. Apartment buildings were struck in Kramatorsk and Sumy.

The Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Poltava and Rivne regions also came under fire. Four people had been reported injured when Zelenskyy posted, and emergency crews were working wherever they were needed.

None of the figures could be independently verified.

Zelenskyy then turned to sanctions. Moscow has tried to build its drones and missiles entirely at home, he wrote, but its ability to escalate still depends heavily on parts from abroad.

Those components come through supply chains from Europe, the United States, China, Japan and many other countries. Most of the suppliers are well-known manufacturers, he said.

“Every Russian drone can actually be stopped right at the production line.”

What’s needed, Zelenskyy argued, is political will in those countries. If the Kremlin has chosen more strikes, sanctions must work and must be strengthened.

In a separate post on Saturday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was answering Russia’s escalation with its own “long-range sanctions.” Oil facilities in the Samara and Volgograd regions had been hit over the previous 24 hours, he wrote.

He also cited operations in the Black Sea and in the Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Samara and Krasnodar regions. Airfields, industrial facilities, oil refineries, a missile and space center and an ammunition depot were among the targets, according to Zelenskyy.

He credited the Security Service of Ukraine, Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Special Operations Forces and the Foreign Intelligence Service for the strikes. No casualties have been reported on the Russian side, and Zelenskyy’s account of the strikes could not be independently verified.
