WASHINGTON, D.C. — Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was transported to a Washington, D.C. hospital by ambulance on Tuesday evening after suffering an allergic reaction, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The incident occurred during Noem’s visit to the capital, where she had been attending high-level security briefings. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched following the unexpected health scare. Multiple officials confirmed she was conscious and communicated with her security detail after arrival.
Noem, 53, was appointed by President Donald Trump to lead the Department of Homeland Security shortly after his re-election. Her confirmation by the Senate in late January positioned her as a central figure in Trump’s second-term cabinet, especially as he prioritizes immigration enforcement.
As Homeland Security Secretary, Noem has overseen a range of aggressive immigration measures backed by Trump, including military deployment to the southern border and efforts to expedite mass deportations using wartime authority.
She also oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which she has publicly criticized. Noem has advocated for dismantling the disaster relief agency, calling it ineffective. Just last week, President Trump stated his intention to phase out FEMA after the 2025 hurricane season.
The White House has been briefed, and officials say she will remain under observation until cleared for release.
