A U.S. KC-135 refueling aircraft was lost in western Iraq during Operation Epic Fury, and rescue efforts were still underway, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said two aircraft were involved in the incident in friendly airspace. One went down in western Iraq, while the other landed safely.
The military said the incident was not caused by hostile fire or friendly fire. It did not say what led to the aircraft loss.
Earlier Thursday, CENTCOM shared photos on social media showing a KC-135 refueling a Navy Super Hornet.
Officials said more information would be released as it becomes available. CENTCOM also asked for patience as authorities work to gather details and inform the families of service members.
