    Kathmandu Designates 70 Schools as Flood Shelters; Hundreds Already Relocated

    Kathmandu sets 70 schools as temporary flood shelters;

    Kathmandu Metropolitan City has set aside 70 community schools as temporary homes for people who are at risk of floods and inundation. The city has transferred families into four of those places and is telling people to stay away from low-lying areas and riverbanks that are unsafe.

    According to Mayor Balen Shah’s Facebook page, 251 people are staying in Jan Vikas Secondary School in Kuleshwar, 70 at Viswa Niketan Secondary School in Tripureshwor, 52 at Guhyeshwari Secondary School in Thapathali, and 20 at Mahendra Saraswati Basic School in Teku. He said that city officials are giving food, restrooms, and water to the people in the shelters.

    The mayor said that the metropolitan police in Kathmandu are putting dirt and gravel in bags to shore up crumbling riverbanks and stop more harm. City workers are on duty throughout the clock in high-risk areas.

    Officials told people not to go into areas that are likely to flood and to stay indoors unless they had to. People who need help can call the city’s helplines at 16600105511, 9851356509, 01-5901764, or 01-5901763.

    The mayor warned that the risk of floods and landslides is still high because it has been raining nonstop. In a Facebook post, Mayor Balen Shah said, “Put your safety and that of your family first.”
