White House press secretary will leave her post at the end of the month and become one of President Donald Trump’s top outside advisers, both announced Wednesday.
In a post on X, Leavitt called her time as press secretary over the past year and a half “the honor and adventure of a lifetime.” She said the decision followed her return to the White House after the birth of her daughter.
Leavitt wrote that she could not be the mother her two young children deserved while giving the press secretary’s job the constant time, energy and attention it required. She described her departure as a “bittersweet decision” to begin a new chapter.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he understood and respected the decision. He called Leavitt one of his most trusted aides and said she would remain an influential voice in the Republican Party as they work to win the midterm elections.
Leavitt confirmed that Trump had asked her to continue serving as a top outside adviser. She said she would remain a vocal advocate for the MAGA movement and the Republican Party, adding that her political work was entering a new phase.
The announcements did not identify Leavitt’s successor or provide further details about her outside advisory role.
Trump also praised Leavitt’s White House leadership and said she had supported him since 2018, including during his 2024 reelection campaign. He described her as one of the best White House press secretaries in the office’s history.
Leavitt thanked Trump for the opportunities he had given her, including the privilege of speaking on his behalf from the White House podium. She also thanked first lady Melania Trump, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, her colleagues, staff, husband and family.
“Thank you, Karoline, for a job well done!” Trump wrote.
