Former first lady Jill Biden says she watched the June 2024 presidential debate fearing her husband was having a stroke – and still does not know what went wrong that night.
“I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never,” Biden told CBS News Sunday Morning‘s Rita Braver in an interview scheduled to air Sunday. “As I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, he’s having a stroke.’ And it scared me to death.”
Biden said she has no explanation for the performance.
Joe Biden’s halting appearance on that debate stage set off a month of Democratic Party pressure for him to step aside. He withdrew from the race roughly four weeks later, with 107 days left before the general election, and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee.
President Trump fired back Friday on Truth Social, faulting Jill Biden for not going onstage to help her husband. Trump also raised the question of whether his own debate performance had unnerved Biden, writing, “Nobody else knows the answer to that, BUT I DO!!!”
The CBS News Sunday Morning interview also covers the election, her husband, and Biden’s new memoir, “View from the East Wing.”
CBS News said the full interview is scheduled to air Sunday.
