James Walkinshaw won Tuesday’s special election to succeed the late Rep. Gerry Connolly in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. The result was transmitted to the House by the Virginia Department of Elections in a letter published in the Congressional Record, affirming Walkinshaw as the winner of the Sept. 9 special general election to fill the vacancy created by Connolly’s death in May. According to his official House biography, Walkinshaw took the oath of office after the election to fill the vacancy created by Connolly’s death.
Supervisor James Walkinshaw resigned on Friday morning from his position as Braddock District Supervisor, following his election to the U.S. House of Representatives 11th Congressional District, Fairfax county Government said. According to Fairfax County Government, that process now moves to the county and state election authorities under Virginia law.
Addressing to his supporters , Walkinshaw said his victory marked a political turning point, calling President Donald Trump’s administration “the most corrupt in American history.”
In a statement posted on his campaign website, Walkinshaw thanked supporters and cast the result as a setback for former President Donald Trump’s agenda.
“I’m honored–and deeply humbled–to share that, with record-setting turnout and an overwhelming margin, I have been elected to serve as the Congressman for Virginia’s 11th District. This victory is not mine alone. It belongs to every family, every volunteer, every grassroots supporter, and every Virginian who stood up to say the reckless Trump agenda must come to an end. I am grateful to my wife, Yvette, and our son, Mateo; to my family and in-laws; to the Connolly family, whose courage inspired our campaign; and to Gerry Connolly, whose legacy of principled leadership lights the way forward. I am deeply thankful to our campaign team, to the volunteers who gave their time and energy, and to the thousands of grassroots donors who fueled this effort. Thanks to you, we dealt a major blow to Donald Trump. This is the first of a series of victories for Democrats: together we’ll elect Abigail Spanberger Governor this November, and take back Congress in 2026. Thank you for your trust, your support, and your partnership in this fight,” he said.
House administrators are expected to complete committee and casework onboarding in short order as Walkinshaw’s office begins outreach to federal employees and constituents in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax.
