Team USA won the men’s Olympic hockey gold medal Sunday, beating Canada 2-1 in overtime when Jack Hughes scored 1:41 into the extra period at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan.
Connor Hellebuyck had an excellent game as he made 41 saves as Team USA outshot Canada 42-28 while winning the gold medal without losing in regulation time. The winning goal came 1:41 into overtime as Jack Hughes scored by beating the goalie with a shot after Zach Werenski entered the offense and passed the puck across the ice to Hughes in the slot.
Matt Boldy scored the opening goal six minutes into the first period as he beat two defenders with a backhanded shot after rushing down the ice, assisted by Auston Matthews and Quinn Hughes. The Canadians scored their goal later in the second period as Cale Makar scored with 1:44 remaining in the second period.
No goals were scored in the third period, but Hellebuyck made a quick save on a shot from Devon Toews, keeping the game tied and sending it to overtime.
With the win, the USA team goes undefeated in regulation at 4-2-0-0 and wins its third gold medal in the event, the first since 1980, in a span of 46 years, and the first since 2026 and 1960, the first year the event was held at the Olympics.
“This game, in a lot of ways, was an inspiration to our country,” said head coach Mike Sullivan, as described by USA Hockey.
