Ivanka Trump’s Lunar New Year Post Draws Backlash Over White Outfit

Critics focused on the color choice after Trump’s Lunar New Year greeting and “Fire Horse” message on X.

Ivanka Trump faced online backlash Tuesday after she wished people a happy Lunar New Year, which began Tuesday, but the backlash wasn’t as much against her post as it was against her white outfit.

In her X post, Ivanka said, “The Year of the Fire Horse calls us to courage, to energy, to intention, and to fearless creation. This new lunar cycle is the time for bold ideas, for decisive action, and for bringing forward the projects I’ve been working on behind the scenes.” She concluded the post with, “Happy Lunar New Year.” Ivanka also included an image of herself wearing a white blazer and looking out into the distance.

Ivanka’s choice of the color white, however, has come under fire as the color is typically used during Chinese New Year to mourn the death of loved ones, while the celebration is typically in the colors of red and gold.

One of the responses to the post came from Izzy Gardon, the communications director for California Governor Gavin Newsom, who made light of the situation in her X post, saying, “She’s already dressed for the Republican Party’s funeral in the midterms. Thoughtful!”

Lunar New Year in 2026 falls on Feb. 17 and marks the start of the Year of the Fire Horse, a designation often tied in popular astrology to intensity and action.
