Italy suspends automatic renewal of defense pact with Israel, Meloni says

Italy will suspend the automatic renewal of its defense agreement with Israel, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday, according to ANSA.

Meloni said the decision was taken “in consideration of the current situation,” ANSA reported. She spoke to reporters during a visit to the Vinitaly wine fair in Verona.

The agreement provides a framework for defense cooperation between Italy and Israel, including the exchange of military equipment and research on defense technology for the armed forces, according to the report.

ANSA said the memorandum took effect on April 13, 2016, and had been set to renew automatically every five years.

The news agency also reported, citing sources, that Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto sent a letter to Israeli counterpart Israel Katz informing him of the suspension.
