Italy Extends Fuel Tax Relief As Energy Pressure Grows

The Italian government has approved a new decree extending a cut in fuel excise duties and expanding support for farmers and export businesses, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday.

In a post on X, Meloni said the step was needed as international tensions continue to push up energy costs and weigh on the broader economy.

“This is a necessary measure to address a particularly delicate phase, marked by international tensions that are producing concrete effects on energy costs and the economy,” she said.

Meloni said the situation remains complex, adding the government will continue to monitor with the utmost attention the evolution of the international scenario and to work on every intervention necessary to protect families, businesses, and jobs.

Meloni did not provide additional details in the post about how long the extended fuel tax relief will remain in place or how much support will be directed to the agriculture and export sectors.
