Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched retaliatory attacks on U.S. military bases in the region after U.S. forces struck Iranian military sites late Tuesday in response to the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter.
The IRGC said U.S. positions in Jordan and Bahrain were targeted. Iran’s state-affiliated Fars News Agency said a base at Al Azraq in northern Jordan was hit and claimed hangars housing F-35 fighter jets were destroyed. Jordan’s military said it intercepted five missiles launched from Iran toward Azraq, according to state media. The Jordanian Armed Forces said falling shrapnel was reported, but no injuries or material damage were recorded.
A light flash was also reported near a U.S. base in Bahrain as sirens sounded in the country. The cause of the flash was not confirmed. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they carried out a drone strike targeting the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
Kuwait also activated air defenses to intercept what it described as “hostile aerial targets,” while Bahrain sounded alarms in response to the attacks.
Earlier Tuesday, U.S. Central Command said American forces struck Iranian air defense, ground control and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM described the strikes as self-defense and said U.S. Air Force and Navy fighter jets used precision munitions in the operation.
CENTCOM said the strikes were ordered after the Apache helicopter was downed and described the operation as proportional to recent attacks on U.S. forces and commercial ships in regional waters.
