Iran’s parliament speaker said Friday that two steps must be completed before any negotiations with the United States begin, adding new conditions ahead of talks expected in Islamabad on Saturday.
In a post on X, Ghalibaf said a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets had not yet been carried out. He said both measures were agreed to by the parties and “must be fulfilled before negotiations begin.”
Ghalibaf is expected to lead Iran’s negotiating team at the Islamabad talks, according to the statement.
Before departing for Pakistan, Vice President JD Vance said the Trump administration was open to talks if Iran negotiates seriously. Speaking with reporters, Vance said President Donald Trump had given clear guidance for the meeting and that he expected a positive process.
In remarks, Vance said, “As the president of the United States said, if the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand.” He added, “If they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive.”
