Iran fires missiles toward Tel Aviv after Larijani killing; Bushehr strike raises nuclear safety fears

Two people were reported killed near Tel Aviv as the conflict widened and concern grew around Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant.

Iran struck back with missiles at central Israel on Tuesday night, following the death of the country’s senior security official, Ali Larijani. Reuters reported that two people were killed in Ramat Gan, which is close to Tel Aviv, as the war escalated with concerns about the safety of Iran’s nuclear program.

Iranian TV reported that the strikes were in retaliation for the death of the country’s security leader, Ali Larijani, who was killed in an airstrike close to Tehran. Reuters reported that the strikes were carried out by Iran, adding that the country’s security leader was a veteran power broker and an ally of the country’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The strikes, according to Reuters, hit densely populated areas in central Israel, with reports that the missiles used by Iran were separating warheads, which can spread impact over a wider area. Reuters reported that an elderly couple was among the two people killed in Ramat Gan, with many houses and vehicles damaged.

The war between the two countries has also brought concerns about the safety of Iran’s nuclear program, with Reuters reporting that Iran has told the International Atomic Energy Agency that a projectile hit an area close to the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant on Tuesday night, with no damage or injury reported.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that the escalation of the war around the country’s nuclear facilities has the potential of increasing the danger of an accident, with the agency repeatedly cautioning that attacks on the facility should not occur due to the danger of radioactive release.
