Trump Blasts Iran Over Drone Strike, Calls It “Foolish Violation” of US Ceasefire Deal

First reported flare-up since Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on the strait.

President Donald Trump said Friday that Iran fired drones at ships in the Strait of Hormuz, calling the attack a “foolish violation” of a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran launched at least four one-way attack drones at vessels transiting the strait. One drone struck the upper deck of a large cargo ship and caused damage, though the vessel continued on its route, he said.

The three other drones were knocked down, Trump said.

Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement. — President Donald Trump

The account has not been independently confirmed. The claims come solely from Trump’s statement, and the ship’s name, flag and the full extent of the damage were not given.

Trump gave little indication the episode would reignite active fighting with Iran.

No similar incident has been reported since the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to open the strait and begin deeper negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
