On May 9, 2025, access to The Wire’s website (thewire.in) was blocked across India, triggering concern among press freedom advocates and media circles. Readers across the country began reporting the inability to access the portal, which is one of India’s leading independent digital news outlets.
In an official statement, The Wire said the action constitutes “a clear violation of the Constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press.” The publication believes the move was executed on the orders of India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, although the government has not officially confirmed this.
“We protest this blatant censorship at a critical time for India when sane, truthful, fair and rational voices and sources of news and information are among the biggest assets that India has,” The Wire stated in its release on May 9, 2025.
The Wire, launched in 2015, is known for its investigative journalism and in-depth political coverage, particularly of the Narendra Modi-led government. BJP supporters have often accused the publication of being biased and hostile to the ruling party. However, the platform insists it follows ethical journalism grounded in constitutional values and public interest.
Regarding responses from international press freedom organizations, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has expressed concern over recent incidents in India involving the silencing and legal harassment of journalists. In a statement dated May 6, 2025, CPJ highlighted a series of events, including the blocking of news channels and assaults on journalists, urging Indian authorities to uphold democratic principles and constitutional protections for press freedom.
Satyamev Jayate, the statement concluded, reaffirming The Wire’s commitment to truthful reporting despite increasing government pressure.
