Bipin Joshi, a 23-year-old Nepali citizen, is believed to have been killed by Hamas during his first months in captivity after being abducted from Kibbutz Alumim on October 7, 2023, Israeli Military confirmed on Tuesday in a post on X.
Bipin Joshi was taken from a bomb shelter in the kibbutz when Hamas attacked, according to the IDF. The National Center of Forensic Medicine will determine final conclusions after completing its examination of the circumstances surrounding his death, IDF said.
Joshi had traveled from Nepal to Israel in September 2023 for a farm training program to learn agricultural techniques. When Hamas attacked the kibbutz, students took shelter in a bomb shelter as militants threw grenades inside. Joshi grabbed one of the grenades and hurled it back out before it exploded, saving several lives. He was then taken captive.
The military also brought back Guy Iluz’s body. Iluz, 26, had run from the Nova music festival but was caught while wounded. He died from injuries that went untreated in Hamas custody, the IDF said.
Two other bodies were recovered, though their families haven’t given permission to release names yet.
IDF officers met with the four families to tell them their relatives were coming home for burial. The military expressed sympathy and said it’s still pushing to recover everyone held in Gaza.
Hamas must honor its obligations under current agreements to return all captives and allow families to bury their dead, the IDF said.
Hamas abducted about 250 people when it stormed southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
The cease-fire is still in place as of Tuesday, the final living hostages are back home, and the diplomatic alliance that made the deal is still strong. But the debate over dead hostages, reports of alleged violations with additional deaths, and decisions about aid and access that are coming up show how rapidly things might slow down. The peace road that opened at Sharm el-Sheikh is small. To keep it open, all sides must take demonstrable actions and the conveners who pushed for it must keep up the pressure. Israeli authorities believe a substantial number of those remaining have likely died.
