Hussein Ali Mwinyi was sworn in Saturday for a second term as president of Tanzania’s semi-autonomous Zanzibar after winning Wednesday’s election with 74.8% of the vote, according to Xinhua.
Chief Justice Khamis Ramadhani Abdalla Shaaban gave the oath in the New Amaan Complex Stadium in front of high-ranking authorities, including Tanzania Vice President Philip Mpango, foreign diplomats, and tens of thousands of people.Afterward, Mwinyi reviewed a guard of honor mounted by the armed forces, Xinhua reported.
In remarks following the Zanzibar Electoral Commission’s declaration, Mwinyi said his administration would place national interests first and urged the 10 opposition candidates to set aside differences and work together. He first won the presidency in 2020.
