The official death toll from Hurricane Melissa climbed to 32 on Monday, November 3, The Jamaica Information Service says. The Jamaica Constabulary Force and Jamaica Defence Force are looking into eight more deaths.
Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon said authorities “do expect that number to increase,” calling the mounting losses “really very painful,” as quoted by Jamaica Information Service.
The JDF and JCF have deployed helicopters to help recover victims in hard-hit areas following last week’s storm, the government said.
On October 28, Melissa made landfall in western Jamaica ; damaging communities across multiple parishes and triggering widespread relief operations.
