Republicans in the House of Representatives narrowly passed the sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill” on Thursday, overcoming internal divisions and staunch opposition from Democrats, including an eight-hour floor speech by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The final vote — 218-214 — capped nearly 24 hours of marathon negotiations, closed-door huddles, and high-stakes lobbying led by Speaker Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump, who made the legislation a top priority ahead of the July 4 deadline.
The measure includes several of Trump’s key domestic policy initiatives, bundled into one comprehensive spending package. Despite grumbling from conservative holdouts over the bill’s scope and price tag, Republican leadership managed to hold the line and deliver the votes in the early hours of Thursday morning.
“This is a transformational victory for the American people,” Speaker Mike Johnson said after the vote. “We stood united behind President Trump’s vision, and we delivered.”
The final push came after Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) attempted to derail the bill with a record-breaking eight-hour and 44-minute speech — the longest in House history — denouncing proposed cuts to social safety-net programs and targeting vulnerable Republicans in swing districts.
The “One Big Beautiful Bill” now heads to the White House, and President Trump is expected to sign it on the holiday.
