Fake ICE Vest, Real Street Assault: DHS Says Man in Viral Honolulu Video Was Not an Agent

Viral Waikiki assault footage drew attention after DHS said the man in the video had no connection to ICE.

A man wearing a tactical vest marked “ICE” was punched and kicked on a Waikiki street in Honolulu in a viral video recorded late Saturday, with footage showing him being surrounded and struck near the roadside. Fox News Digital reported that the assault happened in Waikiki on March 28 and said police information tied the case to the incident seen in the clip.

The Department of Homeland Security later moved to clarify that the man was not a federal immigration officer. Fox News Digital, citing an emailed statement from a DHS spokesperson, reported that “this person is NOT an ICE agent and is not connected to DHS in any way.” The spokesperson also said that impersonating federal immigration officers puts public safety at risk.

According to Fox News Digital, the police have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with the case. The news outlet said that the minor was first charged with second-degree assault, but later the charge was changed to attempted assault. The police haven’t said who the man in the video is yet.

The incident happened the same day as large anti-Trump demonstrations in Honolulu. Hawaiʻi Public Radio reported that local protesters gathered on March 28 under the banner “No Dictators,” part of the wider national protest wave. Still, available reporting has not firmly established that the beating itself took place as part of that demonstration. The investigation remains ongoing.
