At least 23 people died, including several minors, and about a dozen were injured after a fire and explosion ripped through a Waldo’s store in central Hermosillo on Saturday afternoon, according to RTVE.
In a video message, Governor Alfonso Durazo said 23 deaths and 11 injuries had been confirmed. The victims included 12 women, five men, four girls and two boys, RTVE cited the Mexican Red Cross as saying later. The fire broke out at about 3 pm local time when the store was packed with customers preparing for the Day of the Dead holiday.
The authorities are calling the case as an accident. The Sonora Attorney General’s Office said its working hypothesis relies on a transformer inside the store, and full cause determinations will follow once firefighters allow investigators inside, the Sonora Attorney General’s Office stated on its official X account.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences on her social media X account. She said the support teams dispatched to assist the families and the injured.The emergency crews kept the area cordoned off as search and recovery continued into the night.
