    Nepal to build Gen-Z Memorial Park; national day of mourning set for Sept. 17

    Nepal announces a memorial park and a Sept. 17 day of mourning to honor those killed during the Gen-Z protests.

    VT Staffs | Kathmandu, Nepal: On Monday, the government of Nepal announced a plan to construct a Gen-Z Memorial Park to honor the 72 individuals killed during the recent Gen-Z movement, Home and Law Minister Om Prakash Aryal said.

    Speaking to journalists in a press conference, Aryal confirmed the decision, stating, “A principled decision has been made to build a Gen-Z Memorial Park in memory of those killed in the Gen-Z movement. However, the location has not been confirmed yet.”

    The Gen-Z protests against corruption and a government-imposed social media ban, turned violent on Sept. 8 when clashes erupted between demonstrators and police. According to government statistics, the violence claimed the lives of 59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and three security personnel. Additionally, 134 protesters and 57 police personnel were injured.

    The government has also decided to declare a day of mourning on Ashoj 1 (September 17). Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal informed in the press conference that the government has decided to declare a day of mourning in honor of those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement that took place on Bhadra 23 and 24 (September 8 and 9).

    The government has decided to form a high-level investigation committee to conduct an impartial inquiry into the incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z protests.

    Minister Aryal informed that Monday’s new cabinet meeting made a principled decision to form an investigation committee under the leadership of a former judge. Similarly, the meeting decided to provide 15 lakh rupees to the families of the deceased – 10 lakh as relief and 5 lakh for other expenses.

    According to reports, authorities have continued to recover bodies from affected areas, with six found Monday morning at Bhatbhateni in Chabahil Chuchepati. Searching efforts are ongoing as many victims yet to identified. City cleanup efforts are ongoing.
