Ford Recalls 1.46 Million Older U.S. Vehicles Over Rear-View Camera Failures

Federal safety regulators detail a major Ford recall affecting select 2015–2019 Ford and Lincoln models over rear-view camera defects.

Ford announced Wednesday that it will be recalling about 1.45 million older vehicles in the US because rear-view cameras may produce blank, distorted, or reversed images, raising the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported.

The U.S. campaign covers some 2015–2019 Ford and Lincoln models, including F-250 to F-550 Super Duty trucks, Mustang, Edge, Expedition, Transit and Transit Connect, Econoline, Ranger (2019 model year), and Lincoln MKC and Navigator. Rearview cameras will be tested and replaced as needed at no cost to owners, NHTSA reported.

Owners will receive interim letters, VIN lookup on NHTSA’s website.

NHTSA displays 1,456,417 affected vehicles on campaign number 25V572. The agency says the defect blocks the driver’s visibility behind the vehicle, which adds to the risk of a crash; Ford’s internal campaign is 25S89 and the action expands a prior recall.

In addition to that, Ford will provide warranty coverage for millions more vehicles tied to rear-camera problems, according to Reuters. The company has issued a number of camera-related recalls this year, some of them initially aimed at more recent model years. Reuters also referenced five crashes and thousands of warranty claims for camera-related issues in related filings, with no reported injuries.

Owners will be able to call Ford or Lincoln dealers to schedule repairs once parts and procedures are available. Questions regarding eligibility can be answered by utilizing the VIN tool on NHTSA’s web site.

Mail notices will begin as outlined in the recall notices; follow-up letters will be mailed when a final repair is available, NHTSA said.
