Flash floods triggered by intense overnight rainfall have devastated Central Texas, killing at least 13 people and leaving 23 girls missing from a private Christian summer camp, authorities confirmed on Friday. The area impacted includes Kerr County and the broader Texas Hill Country, where rivers surged beyond their banks following relentless storms.

“There are currently about 23 kids unaccounted for at Camp Mystic,” Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said in a Friday afternoon press conference. The camp, located near the Guadalupe River in Hunt, typically hosts around 750 girls each summer.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed the death toll at 13 and warned the public to brace for more fatalities as recovery efforts continue. “We’re still accounting for multiple individuals,” Leitha said. “This is one of the most devastating natural disasters we’ve seen in years.”

Governor Greg Abbott shared updates from the field and thanked first responders, including the Texas National Guard and Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1), who deployed helicopter crews and rescue teams to the worst-hit areas. “Air rescue missions like this are being done around the clock. We will not stop until everyone is accounted for,” Abbott posted on social media.

Search and rescue operations are focused on riverfront areas including Hunt and Kerrville, where water levels rose rapidly, sweeping away campsites and vehicles. Witnesses described harrowing scenes of flash floodwaters engulfing cabins, trees being uprooted, and people climbing onto rooftops to await airlift evacuations.

The Texas Military Department confirmed its ongoing deployment: “Our service members are working tirelessly throughout the Independence Day weekend — as long as it takes to get the job done. The Texas National Guard is Always Ready.”
