BREAKING: FDA Warns Against Certain Walmart ‘Great Value’ Frozen Shrimp Over Cs-137 Risk

FDA flags select Walmart Great Value raw shrimp lots for Cs-137 concerns and urges caution as the probe continues.

    DEVELOPING

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to eat, sell, or serve specific lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart after U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected Cesium-137 (Cs-137) in related shipping containers and FDA testing found detectable Cs-137 in a detained breaded-shrimp sample from Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS). No product that tested positive entered U.S. commerce, and the level detected in the detained sample (~68 Bq/kg) is below FDA’s intervention level; however, the agency says the affected products appear to have been handled under insanitary conditions that could pose a safety concern.

Consumers should throw away the following lots sold at Walmart stores in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, OH, OK, PA, TX, and WV: Lot 8005540-1 (Best by 3/15/2027), 8005538-1 (Best by 3/15/2027), and 8005539-1 (Best by 3/15/2027) of Great Value Frozen Raw White Vannamei Shrimp (2 lb, EZ-Peel Tail-On). FDA has recommended Walmart conduct a recall and has placed the supplier on Import Alert 99-51 to block entry of implicated shipments while the investigation continues. For health context, the CDC notes that long-term, low-dose exposure to Cs-137 can raise cancer risk.

What’s next: FDA’s investigation is ongoing; more product details may be added. If your package matches the lots above, do not consume it—discard it and contact your retailer.

This is a developing story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
