The FBI executed a court-authorized federal search warrant Wednesday in Portsmouth, Virginia, where The Associated Press reported agents searched the district office of Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas.
The FBI confirmed it was carrying out a federal search warrant in Portsmouth but did not publicly identify Lucas or describe the target of the investigation. The agency said there was no threat to public safety and released no further details because the matter remains ongoing, according to WHRO.
AP reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, that the search was connected to a corruption investigation.
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin reported on X that federal agents were serving multiple search warrants, including at Lucas’ office and a nearby cannabis dispensary. Melugin said federal law enforcement sources described the matter as a major corruption probe.
Lucas is a Democratic state senator from Portsmouth and serves as president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate.
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, a Democrat, urged caution in a statement responding to the search, saying Lucas “has not been charged with anything” and that the public should allow the facts to come out before drawing conclusions. Scott also questioned how Fox News was first on the scene and said Virginians deserve more information about what the search was actually about.
