Fairfax Police Shoot Suspect After Mantua Apartment Attack Leaves Two Women Dead, Son-in-Law Critical

Chief Kevin Davis said officers arrived during an active assault and fired after repeated commands to drop the weapon were ignored.

A man in his 50s was shot and killed by Fairfax County police officers early on Monday morning after he attacked family members with a bladed weapon inside an apartment in the area of Mantua, leaving two women dead and a third fighting for his life.

The police received a call just before 5 a.m. on Monday about a domestic assault in the 3900 block of Persimmon Circle, where they encountered the suspect, an adult man armed with a bladed weapon; during this encounter, police fired one shot that hit the man, who died at the scene, according to an initial statement from the Fairfax County Police Department.

Inside the home, officers found two adult females and one adult male with stab wounds, according to the police. One adult woman was later confirmed dead at the hospital, and a second adult female was later declared dead, according to the authorities. There were two victims who were reportedly hospitalized in life-threatening condition earlier today, according to a department update.

The two adult women, whom police identified as the suspect’s wife and daughter, were killed, and the adult man with stab wounds, police said, is the suspect’s son-in-law, according to a briefing by Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference that the officers arrived at the scene as the suspect was actively stabbing the male victim, and the officer ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, which was repeatedly done before the officer opened fire. The son-in-law was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

A 1-year-old child inside the home was not physically harmed and was taken into custody of child welfare authorities as the county worked on notifying relatives, according to the police chief.

According to the authorities, the names of the suspect and victims are not released yet, but according to Davis, the officer involved in the shooting was put on modified duty, a standard procedure for officers involved in a shooting, and Davis said that authorities are expected to release body camera footage and 911 audio within 30 days.
