Poll: Nearly 70% of Americans Believe Government Is Hiding Truth About Jeffrey Epstein

Majorities of both Republicans and Democrats question the official Epstein narrative.

    NEED TO KNOW
    • 69% of Americans say the government is concealing Epstein’s “client list.”
    • Only 8% believe the government is being fully transparent.
    • 47% believe Epstein was murdered; just 23% accept the official suicide explanation.
    • The belief in a cover-up spans party lines, including majorities of Republicans and Democrats.
    • Survey conducted by Yahoo News and YouGov between July 24 and 28, 2025.

    Public Consensus Crosses Party Lines

A newly released Yahoo News/YouGov poll reveals that nearly seven out of ten Americans believe the U.S. government is concealing key information about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including his alleged network of powerful clients.

The poll, conducted from July 24 to July 28 and involving 1,729 U.S. adults, found that 69% of respondents believe the government is hiding Epstein’s “client list,” even after being told that former President Donald Trump’s Justice Department concluded there was no such list implicating well-known associates in criminal activity. This sentiment is not confined to one side of the political aisle — it includes a majority of both Democrats and Republicans.

    Widespread Doubt About Epstein’s Death

According to the survey, the official explanation for Epstein’s death in 2019 — that he died by suicide while in federal custody — is believed by only 23% of Americans. Nearly half (47%) believe Epstein was murdered, while 30% say they are unsure. Notably, 51% of Democrats and 42% of Republicans say they believe Epstein was killed rather than died by his own hand.

“The consensus emerging from this data is unmistakable: a large majority of Americans distrust the official narrative and suspect a government cover-up,” said Yahoo News in its summary of the results.

    Government Transparency in Question

In total, 67% of respondents said the government is hiding information about Epstein’s death. This includes 52% of Republicans and 60% of Democrats, suggesting that mistrust in the government’s transparency regarding Epstein is a rare point of bipartisan agreement.

The skepticism comes despite years of official investigations, including the controversial non-prosecution agreement Epstein received in 2008, his subsequent arrest in 2019, and the criminal trial of his associate Ghislaine Maxwell in 2021. The poll reflects a broader cultural sentiment that Epstein’s ties to wealthy and powerful individuals remain unexplained and shrouded in secrecy.
