The Poll That Sparked a Movement
On the evening of June 5, Elon Musk posted a poll on X, asking Americans: “Time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?” Within 24 hours, the poll received millions of views—and a commanding response.
By June 6, Musk returned with the results X,“The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree. This is fate.”
He added that the new movement would be called the America Party—a centrist alternative, hinting at disillusionment with both major U.S. parties.
Goodbye to Trump—And DOGE
Just days before announcing his new party initiative, Musk had officially stepped down as head of DOGE—the Department of Government Efficiency—after just 130 days in the role. During his tenure, Musk helped rally conservative tech elites and contributed nearly $275 million to support President Donald Trump’s re-election bid.
But by June 6, the alliance had fallen apart. Musk took to X to express deep regret over his participation, saying, “I’m sorry but I just can’t stand it anymore.” His criticism targeted the Trump administration’s massive new spending bill, which he said would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”
The Epstein Allegations and Social Media Storm
What followed shocked even Musk’s critics. In a provocative move, Musk reposted a video of President Trump at a party with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He also accused Trump of being listed in the infamous “Epstein files”—claims for which no public confirmation has yet surfaced.
“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk wrote. “@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.” He signed off the post with, “Have a nice day, DJT!”
Trump Fires Back
Trump, for his part, dismissed Musk’s statements and legacy in his typical combative tone. “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House, and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” he claimed in an interview with CNN.
He went further, warning Musk of “serious repercussions” if he supports Democrats in the 2026 midterms. Trump even suggested that canceling government contracts with Musk’s companies like SpaceX and Tesla could be “a smart way to reduce spending.”
America Party: Vision or Vanity Project?
Musk’s call for a centrist revolution has ignited conversation across media and political circles. But critics question whether the “America Party” is a serious effort or just another social media spectacle from the world’s richest man. Supporters, however, see it as the beginning of a new political chapter—one unbound by the left-right dichotomy.
Whether Musk’s party gains traction remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the Musk-Trump alliance that once defined a tech-powered populist surge has now collapsed in spectacular—and very public—fashion.
