Eight teens arrested after multiple fights in Southwest D.C.

Arrests followed several disturbances in Southwest Washington as D.C.’s temporary youth curfew policy remained active.

Eight teens were arrested on Saturday night after several fights broke out in Southwest Washington. Temporary juvenile curfew zones were still in place in some parts of the District.

According to FOX 5 DC, the police were called to several problems between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Investigators said that many people were involved, but most of the events happened outside the areas where the curfew was supposed to be in place for the weekend.

The arrests happened while the District was still using temporary youth curfew areas. A law lets police limit where groups of minors can meet. City leaders put the measure in place to try to stop large groups of young people from gathering and causing trouble.

The curfew-zone authority will end on April 15. Last week, the D.C. Council put off a vote on whether to extend the policy through the summer. This left the future of the enforcement tool up in the air.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the Department of Parks and Recreation also held alternative events for teens, giving them another option during the curfew period with music and activities. The report says that young people who went to those events were told that if they were stopped while driving through a curfew zone on the way home, they could show their tickets to the police.
