Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino has disclosed the discovery of a room within the FBI headquarters containing a significant amount of unprocessed evidence dating back to the tenure of former Director James Comey. The materials, found in bags, were not digitized or included in the agency’s official records.
In a recent interview, Bongino stated, “There was a room, and we found a lot of stuff, a hidden room. I wouldn’t call it hidden, but hidden from us, at least, and not mentioned to us. We found stuff in there, and a lot of it’s from the Comey era.”
He further explained the complexities involved in declassifying the materials, noting that some of the information pertains to other intelligence agencies, which limits the FBI’s ability to unilaterally declassify and release the documents. “We are working our damnedest right now to declassify. I totally understand people saying, ‘well do it now.’ The process is not all the information is ours to declassify; some is other intelligence agencies. It’s not. We literally can’t do it,” Bongino said.
The revelation has sparked discussions about the transparency and record-keeping practices within the FBI during Comey’s leadership. Bongino’s commitment to uncovering and releasing the information underscores the agency’s efforts to address past oversights and maintain public trust.
As the declassification process continues, the FBI has not provided a specific timeline for when the materials will be made public. However, Bongino assured that the agency is prioritizing the matter and working diligently to ensure the information is released responsibly and in accordance with legal protocols.
