China has successfully conducted a zero-altitude escape test for its new-generation manned spacecraft Mengzhou (Dream Vessel), marking a major breakthrough in the country’s crewed lunar exploration program, according to the Global Times.

According to the China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO), the test comprehensively evaluated the Mengzhou spacecraft’s escape and rescue subsystems, including sequencing, in-flight separation, and closed-loop trajectory control. Real flight data was collected to support system optimization.
The Mengzhou spacecraft—fully developed in China—is designed to carry up to seven astronauts and meets internationally advanced standards. It will serve as the primary vehicle for future crewed lunar missions and space station-related applications.
The success of this test lays a solid technical foundation for China’s future manned missions to the Moon. Development of the associated Long March-10 carrier rocket and lunar lander is progressing steadily, with further testing planned as scheduled.
CMSEO stated that escape and rescue systems are essential safety measures for manned missions, allowing astronauts to return safely in the event of serious malfunction or emergency during launch.
