U.S. Central Command said Monday that six U.S. service members have been killed in action as fighting continues in the region, providing a new casualty figure in a statement issued from Tampa, Florida. U.S. Central Command said the count was current “as of 4 pm ET, March 2.”
CENTCOM said U.S. forces also recovered the remains of two service members who had previously been unaccounted for. The remains were recovered from a facility that was struck during Iran’s initial attacks in the region, the command said.
The military said, “Major combat operations continue,” and it is withholding the identities of the fallen until 24 hours after next-of-kin notifications are completed.
In an earlier update on Monday, CENTCOM said it focused on maritime security, saying Iran had “11 ships in the Gulf of Oman” two days ago and “ZERO” today. The command accused Iran of harassing and attacking international shipping in the Gulf of Oman for decades and said, “Those days are over.”
CENTCOM added that freedom of maritime navigation has underpinned U.S. and global economic prosperity for more than 80 years and said U.S. forces “will continue to defend it.”
