In a significant drug seizure, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry in Texas confiscated over $517,000 worth of heroin concealed inside a passenger vehicle attempting to enter the United States from Mexico, according to a press release.
The incident occurred on July 9 at the Camino Real International Bridge, where CBP officers referred a Dodge pickup truck for secondary inspection. Utilizing nonintrusive inspection equipment and a canine detection team, the officers uncovered six concealed packages of alleged heroin weighing a total of 26.96 pounds (12.23 kg).
According to CBP, the heroin was ingeniously hidden inside tortilla presses and candy dispensers. The narcotics are estimated to have a street value of $517,072.
CBP’s Office of Field Operations seized both the heroin and the vehicle involved. The driver and passenger were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which has since launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
This seizure underscores the continuous efforts of federal authorities to prevent the trafficking of illegal narcotics through U.S. ports of entry, especially along the southern border.
