Canada’s Department of National Defence said Sunday that people were killed and injured in an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday.
No casualty count was released. The military said it would not provide details about the dead and injured before completing family notifications, and was still assessing the impact.
A fire began in the base’s training area around 4 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time on Oct. 17 and quickly spread beyond it, according to the statement.
Military crews worked alongside civilian responders. The armed forces said they were arranging support with emergency services and local authorities.
The fire also disrupted advance voting. Elections Alberta said the Wainwright Communiplex voting location closed after strong winds drove flames into the surrounding municipal district. Its notice listed alternative locations in Lloydminster and Vermilion.
The defence department’s statement did not explain what caused the incident. The military said it would release more information as it became available.
