Tens of Thousands March in Brussels for Palestinians; Police Count 70,000

Police put the turnout at 70,000 as red-card marchers press EU action on Gaza; organizers say 120,000 joined.

Tens of thousands of people marched through Belgium’s capital on Sunday to express support for the Palestinians and demand more robust measures to safeguard civilians in Gaza. Organizers reported that 110,000 people attended, while police estimated that 70,000 attended in the protest. Demonstrators wore red and carried red cards as a symbolic support to end war.

According to Euro news, more than 200 humanitarian and human rights organizations, such as Oxfam, Doctors without Borders, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Save the Children, and others, are drawing the red line.

The protest comes days after Belgium announced at the UN General Assembly later this month that it would join the UK and France in recognizing a Palestinian state and impose sanctions on Israel, subject to certain conditions.

The purpose of the red cards, according to the marchers on Sunday, was to draw a “red line” over the suffering of civilians and to urge European politicians to take further action. Organizers said they will continue to mobilize in Brussels while diplomatic negotiations continue at the UN and EU.
