Drone Strike Causes Generator Fire Outside Barakah Nuclear Plant Perimeter in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi officials said the fire did not affect plant safety, essential systems or normal operations

A drone strike inside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant sparked a fire at an outdoor electrical generator in the UAE’s Al Dhafra Region, Abu Dhabi Media Office said.

There were no effect on radiological safety levels, the Abu Dhabi Media Office said.

There were no injuries from the drone attack, Abu Dhabi officials said in the statement.

The fire was at the generator, and Emergency teams in Abu Dhabi were responded. The media office reported that authorities took precautions, but there was no indication of widespread damage.

The Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority said the incident did not affect the plant’s safety or the readiness of its critical systems.

“All units at Barakah are operating normally,” officials said.

“As more information becomes available, it will be released,” authorities said. They also urged the public to trust official sources and not to propagate rumors or unverified reports.

Barakah is the UAE’s first nuclear power station.

In April 2008, the UAE government made an official announcement of its intention to explore nuclear energy as a supplementary energy source to meet the country’s increasing energy needs.
