At least 19 people were killed and over 60 others injured when a Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) F-7 training jet crashed into a building of Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara area on Monday, officials confirmed,Bangladesh news agency BSS News reported.
Md Shajahan Sikder, Assistant Director and Media Officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), told BSS that the crash occurred at approximately 1:18 PM, just 12 minutes after the aircraft took off from its base. “Nineteen people have so far been killed and 60 others injured in the jet crash,” he said, noting that the identities of the deceased are still being verified, the outlet reported
The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) stated the jet had taken off at 1:06 PM for a training sortie. According to the Chief Advisor’s Press Wing, more than 100 people were impacted by the incident, with 83 individuals receiving treatment in various hospitals across the capital.
Rescue and Medical Emergency
Rescue efforts have been intensified, with personnel from the FSCD, army, police, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducting joint operations at the crash site. The BGB has deployed three platoons to assist with evacuation and crowd control.
Emergency medical services have been mobilized rapidly. The National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery has admitted over 30 patients, and a special metro train coach has been reserved for transporting the wounded from Uttara. An emergency hotline—01949-043697—has been activated for families seeking information about the injured.
Nation in Mourning
The government has declared a one-day state mourning to be observed on Tuesday. All national flags at government buildings, educational institutions, and Bangladeshi missions abroad will be flown at half-mast. Special prayers will be held in mosques, temples, churches, and other places of worship nationwide.
Chief Adviser Yunus, Sheikh Hasina React
Interim Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus expressed “deep shock and sorrow” over the crash. In a statement reported by India Today, Yunus pledged full support for the victims and confirmed an official investigation.
His adviser, Asif Nazrul, stated that preparations had been made to send burn victims abroad if required. “There will be no shortage in our medical rehabilitation,” he added.
Former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina also issued a statement mourning the tragedy. Calling it a “humanitarian crisis,” she urged Awami League workers and citizens to assist in relief and rescue efforts, donate blood, and provide logistical support to the affected.
China-Made Jet Raises Safety Questions
This is the second time a Chinese-made F-7 jet has crashed in recent months. In June, a similar aircraft from the Myanmar Air Force went down in the Sagaing region, killing its pilot. These repeated incidents are fueling scrutiny over the reliability of Chinese defense equipment in the region.
